Most of us love spending time outdoors with our furry friends during those long summer days. But it can get downright hot! By taking a few precautions, you and your pet can enjoy the summer and stay safe at the same time.
- NEVER leave your pet in a vehicle unattended for any length of time!
- Fact: on an 85-degree day, it only takes 10 minutes for the inside of your car to reach 104 degrees
- Fact: Within 30 minutes the car’s interior can climb from 85 degrees to 119 degrees.
- It’s best to leave them at home where they will be safe. In many states, it’s now illegal to leave pets in the car.
- LOTS of freshwater – Did you know that your pet can only survive for 2 to 3 days without water? If your hiking, remember to do it when it’s cooler outside and take a collapsible bowl and water with you. Don’t forget to take breaks!
- The pavement outside can be a scorcher! If you can’t keep the back of your hand on the pavement for more than 5 seconds, then it’s too hot for your pet’s paws!
OVERHEATING IN PETS is unfortunately very common. Symptoms are excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, weakness, stupor, or even collapse. Other systems could include bloody diarrhea and vomiting. If you can’t get them to the vet immediately, make sure you get them in the shade, place a cool or cold, wet towel around the neck and head (do not cover pet’s eyes, nose, or mouth). Remove the towel, wring it out, re-wet it and wrap your pet again. Repeat every few minutes as you cool your pet. If you have access to a hose run cool water over their body especially the hindquarters and between the back legs. Sweep the water away as it holds heat to the body. Transport your pet to the veterinarian as soon as possible.
