It’s scary to see how many cases of Coronavirus there have been since last March.  It’s just as scary to see how many people, family, and friends have been hospitalized or, sadly, passed away.  We all think it will never happen to us…right?

Our pets are playing a much larger role today as more of us are working from home.  As the weather gets colder and more time is being spent inside, coronavirus cases are starting to increase.  Recently, I had a friend who contracted the coronavirus and called in tears.  Not only was she scared of the virus and her health, but also of what would happen to her pet if she had to be hospitalized.  Of course, I told her not to worry and that I would take care of him.  But not all of us have someone that can step up to take care of our pets in an emergency.  When you get sick, that is not the best time to have to worry about a plan.

Legally Pets are considered personal property, just like your car or TV. Without any specific plans, your heirs will inherit your pets. Depending upon the situation, that might or might not be in the best interest of your pet.

First, line up a couple of trusted caregivers, for short term and long term care.  Discuss with them any medications and specific diets that your pet has.  Make sure to let them know the cost associated with it so there are no surprises. You also want to make sure to keep in touch with them, in case your pet’s needs change over time.  I have instructions in my pet’s emergency go-bag just in case and keep them updated as needed.

Next, carry a wallet card with emergency contact information related to your pet.  You can also give your vet and attorney a copy.  It is important to include any of your wishes in your Trust or Will if you have one.

Our pets are always there for us!  Let’s make sure we are there for them.

We hope you all have a Happy and Safe Holiday!

This is such a great topic for life is fast pace & it’s easy to over look things such as this. I believe we all think about it & maybe even mention to family but there is nothing like having a clear plan in writing for ones wishes in case of emergency or death. Makes me wonder how many people that have no plan in place might have lost a pet from going in hospital during pandemic. The plan I placed in the emergency bag is a great idea so any relative or friend picking up my pet would have all the necessary information as well as the emergency bag with them. I have multiple pets as well as multiple health problems so thanks petevacpak for reminding us of something so important to do. I’m thinking of adding a backup to mine for during pandemic possibility the person I am choosing could be sick as well. Merry Christmas & thank you for helping so many pets as well as owners to keep our fur family safe.

Love this great reminder about being prepared for our pets during the Pandemic. It is also good to have the plan in place for unforeseen emergencies.
The wallet card that you mentioned is that available through Pet Evac Pak? Really like the idea of giving a copy of it to my Vet and a copy to my Trust and in my Pet Evac Paks.
Thanks so much, love reading your blog and helping to make me take the time to plan ahead to be prepared.
    Happy Holidays,
    Debbie

Thanks for your response Debbie! We use our ID card as a wallet card. It has all the same information on it. If you would like a printable version just let us know at info@petevacpak.com and we can send you a soft copy for you to print.
      Happy Holidays!
