New Year’s Resolution Tips
Create an Emergency Kit for Your Pet
As a pet owner, it’s important to be prepared for any emergency situation that may arise. One of the best ways to ensure your pet’s safety is by creating an emergency kit specifically for them. This kit should include water, food, basic first aid supplies, bowls, a collar and leash or slip lead, shot records, medications, a night light, waste disposal bags, and a litterbox with litter for cats. By having a dedicated kit ready to go, you’ll be able to quickly and easily take care of your pet’s needs during an emergency. It’s also important to have a carrier or crate ready to go. Most shelters will not have supplies for your pets.
Have a Buddy System in Place
In addition to having an emergency kit, it’s also important to have a buddy system in place. This means having a trusted friend or family member who can take care of your pet if you are not home during an emergency. Make sure this person knows where your emergency kit is located and has a copy of your pet’s shot records and any other important information. You should also plan out evacuation routes and make sure your buddy knows the plan. By having a buddy system in place, you can ensure your pet’s safety even if you’re not able to be there yourself.
Most government agencies recommend having a minimum of a 72-hour supply of food and water for your pets and by being prepared and staying informed you could save your pet’s life during a disaster.
