July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month, making it an ideal time to take steps to ensure your pet’s safety. Whether you’re travelling for vacation or preparing for a potential disaster. Here are several actions you can take to keep your pet safe and improve your chances of reuniting with them if they go missing.
Tracking:

Microchipping and using a GPS tracking device are the best ways to help reunite with your pet if they go missing. The main difference between the two with a GPS device can track your pet with your phone, but it does have a limited battery life. A microchip lasts for your pet’s lifetime, but does not actively track your pet. However, most rescues, veterinarians, and animal control can scan them to see if they are microchipped. If you have moved or changed your phone number, keep all your information updated with the microchip company. Check with your local Animal Control for free clinics in your area.
Securing:
To keep your pets secure, it’s best to use a slip lead or a harness so they can’t escape. If you choose to use a harness, make sure it fits correctly.
Ensure your fences are secure at all times and gates are closed and locked.
In case of a disaster while you are away from home, set up a buddy system with a trusted neighbor who can retrieve your pets and their safety supplies. Make sure they know where to find these supplies.
Identification:
A photo with you and your pet is a great way to be able to identify your pet if lost. Take a selfie that captures any distinctive markings your pet has to make it easier for identification.
ID tags with your phone number can help get your pets back to you quickly.
We hope you and your pets stay safe while enjoying all the outdoor activities this summer!
