While you NEVER want to leave your pet behind in the event of an emergency, it is crucial to have proper identification for them.

If by chance you do get separated by taking a few simple steps, you can significantly increase the chances of being reunited with your furry friend.

  • Microchipping – One of the most effective methods is microchipping. A tiny chip, the size of a grain of rice, is implanted under your pet’s skin. This chip contains a unique identification number that can be scanned by veterinarians, shelters, or animal control officers.  Once this is done always make sure your information is current and up to date.  Additionally,
  • ID Tag – an ID tag with your contact information is essential. It should be securely attached to your pet’s collar and include your name, phone number, and address.
  • Selfie with your pet – having a recent photo of you with your pet is invaluable. This visual representation will aid in identifying your pet if you become separated. Remember, in times of crisis, having these measures in place can make all the difference in ensuring your pet’s safety. Make sure you add a copy of your photo to your pet’s go bag.
  • Marker – Last but not least I had a rescue tell me if none of these items have been done and you have to leave your pet behind write your phone number on their belly with a sharpie or permanent marker.
